Three days at the Sante Fe International Folk Art Market left me savouring a rich visual feast. There were artisans, artists and craftspeople from small villages and towns all over the world with their beautiful art and craft. .. all continents were represented. Many people were from indigenous communities and they proudly wore the colours and national clothing that reflected their country and their culture. I was particularly attracted to and interested in this work as it reminded me of the skilled artists from my own Red Lake home and the work I have done in collaboration with First Nations artists.
What stands out for me the most is the beautiful tapestry woven together from the faces of people at this show – the proud faces of the artists from the International Community and the inviting faces of the organizers and volunteers from Santa Fe. This market was run like a well-oiled machine supported by the best hospitality. It made the whole experience a pleasure . Hats off to you Santa Fe for showcasing the richness and beauty of home this way through your exceptional hosting and a special thanks to my dear friend Glynnis for the comfort of her beautiful home.
With so many rich details to get lost in and enjoy, one memory stands out for me….a tall handsome man belonging to an indigenous people from Niger in Africa showing his leather camel saddles, leather bags and wall hangings. The craftsmanship was exquisite and I couldn’t resist buying a stunning fringed bag. It was pure delight to make this wonderful connection as well as meeting others from very small villages in Indonesia and India and all over the world.
